Lindsay Lohan has apologised to the people of Kettering, after her ‘busy schedule’ prevented her from turning on the city’s Christmas lights.

Lohan had been invited to do the switch on earlier this year after she tweeted about Kettering while watching the results of the Brexit referendum.

In a video shared on her Instagram and Twitter accounts, Lohan said: “Hi everyone in Kettering, it’s Lindsay Lohan. I really wanted to make it there to light the tree but with my busy schedule I wasn’t able to, and I appreciate the offer. Happy holidays!”

She then tweeted “Kettering wish I could be with you today, sending all my [love].”

Back in June, Lohan had become an unlikely political pundit during the referendum results night.

After hearing that Kettering had voted to ‘leave’, Lohan tweeted: “#REMAIN Sorry, but #KETTERING where are you&why is this woman @BBCNews speaking on people rather than TELLING us what happens if UK LEAVES?”

She was then invited to turn on the town’s Christmas lights by MP Philip Hollobone, who had found her tweet “offensive”.

The actress later told the MP on Twitter: “Direct message me about your offer. Would be happy to light the Christmas tree in #Kettering.”

But speaking to the BBC on Thursday, Mr Hollobone said he was “disappointed” that Lohan was a no-show.

"I think that when you're an international celebrity who says you're going to do something then people expect you to do it,” he said.

"I think most of us thought that she wouldn't actually come but I think there was a little bit of all of us that hoped she would."
