Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby – the fourth cinematic reimaging of its kind – was supposed to be the biggest film of the summer. But if the early reviews are anything to go by, this is going to be one almighty flop.

Granted, not all of the reviews are out yet; there’s no score on Rotten Tomatoes and the big-hitters are yet to give their penny’s worth. Still, people were worried about this film, with many predicting it could be a disaster. The Wrap say that “Baz Luhrmann sucks the life out of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s immortal novel and replaces it with empty filigree and overbearing style,” at the start of their review, adding: “once his agenda of swooping camera movements and gleaming roadsters and anachronistic music takes full hold, there's nothing left to fall back on — not even Fitzgerald's prose, much of it quoted directly throughout, is enough to keep this adaptation from feeling like a stunningly expensive advertisement for the Brooks Brothers collection of "Gatsby"-inspired duds.” Hitfix were equally unimpressed, labelling the film “okay and nothing more”. Their review goes on to say that “DiCaprio is a total misfire as Gatsby,” and “Technically, Luhrmann's in show-off mode from the opening of the film to the close”.

So there you have it; it’s bad. Don’t worry, it’s probably not that bad, but you maybe should start reading another book, as it doesn’t look like you’re going to be able to impress anyone with your knowledge of this one – no one will care.
