It's a shame for fans of the novel
Baz Luhrmann is known for his stylised approach to film making, but has he taken The Great Gatsby too far? The early reviews are in, and it appears the first critics through the door can’t decide.
The Wrap kicked us off, and it’s fair to say they didn’t like it. This film marks the official moment in which Baz Luhrmann's signature style has become self-parody,” goes the review. “So we beat on, boats against the current, jumping the shark.” Hit Fix, too, weren’t sure about the latest adaption of this literary classic. It's as if every bit of creativity dried up the moment the deal was signed. Yes, this is exactly what I would expect a Baz Luhrmann 'Gatsby' would look like, but is that enough?” We don’t know Hit Fix, we don’t know. The Hollywood Reporter have a more positive slant in their review. “The cast is first-rate,” they write, “the ambiance and story provide a measure of intoxication and, most importantly, the core thematic concerns pertaining to the American dream, self-reinvention and love lost, regained and lost again are tenaciously addressed.”
If you’re a fan of the book, then you’re going to see this regardless of what the critics are saying. But if you’ve seen the trailer and you’re thinking about checking it out, we’d wait until the full set of reviews have come in. It looks as if Lurhmann may have taken his signature style a little too far.
