There’s nobody out there that can argue with us when we say that Lady GaGa aims to be shocking. Since she first burst onto the scene with her debut album The Fame in 2008 she has made a concerted effort to make sure that her music, her image and her performances are regularly debated. From outfits made entirely from raw meat to appearing onstage wearing nothing but fishnets and bubbles, Gaga has worked hard to be anything but your run-of-the-mill pop star.

Recently Gaga has been caught lap dancing at BPM Nightclub in New York since the furor died down from her heavily criticised performance at SXSW, which saw a ‘vomit artist’ projectile vomit all over her. Twice. That two times too many. Gaga had explained before the vomit fest, “I believe being an individual and speaking your mind is one of the boldest things you can do. As for my bold act, you’ll have to wait for the show.” Whether Gaga’s act was bold and artsy or just plain bizarre is the question.

Lady Gaga prides herself on her performance art, always with a mind to make some sort of comment about society or an issue that the singer feels strongly about. The problem is, a lot of the time the point is lost on her audience and they end up more confused than shocked. Of course, she should be praised for so bravely continuing to perform in just the way that she wants, but is the whole routine becoming a little tired? It was quite telling that no fans were particularly surprised by Lady Gaga’s decision to be repeatedly thrown up on, and little debate stemmed from the performance other than an angry Demi Levato speaking up.

In the six years that Gaga has now been famous we’ve seen her in an array of wacky outfits, what’s another pair of trotter style platforms teamed with a revealing catsuit? It may have been original once, but when you’ve seen Gaga do it time and time again, the novelty simply begins to fade. Sadly for Gaga, real name Stefani Germanotta, she is no longer the fascinating creature she was back in ’08. If you’ve seen one ‘outrageous’ Gaga performance, you’ve seen them all.

Perhaps the most radical thing that she could do now is actually focus on her music, rather than her image. Sales of her latest album Artpop sold 75% less in the first week that it was released than her previous album Born This Way. Rather than trying to do whatever the hell she was trying to do with the vomit performance, she can remind us all that she’s a credible artist with a fantastic voice underneath all the bravado.
