Actor Keanu Reeves unexpectedly turned up at Portcullis House on Tuesday (June 28) leaving us all to wonder if he’d come to save the country after Brexit. The actor posed for selfies with MPs during his visit, while Twitter rolled out every Matrix-related Brexit gag you could possibly think of.

Once Twitter caught wind of Keanu’s surprise visit speculation began that it was all something to do with Britain’s decision to leave the EU last week. “Keanu Reeves is in parliament. One can only hope this means that the last week has been a glitch in The Matrix,” tweeted Richard Littler.

“Of course Keanu Reeves has rushed to parliament. Only he can save us now,” tweeted another user. Even MPs seemed to be getting in on the joke. Conservative Ed Vaizey shared a picture with the actor and wrote: “#Brexit explained - it's the matrix.”

Other users thought Keanu was the perfect replacement for David Cameron and should take charge of the country. One tweeter shared: “Is Keanu Reeves in Parliament to swoop in as Prime Minister? Because I am totally down for that. #mostexcellent.”

But it seems the actor’s visit was actually for non-Brexit related reasons, sadly. Keanu was reportedly visiting as a guest of Conservative MP for Stratford-on-Avon Nadhim Zahawi who he accompanied to a talk later that day. Conservative MP Mark Pritchard also tweeted: "Met Keanu Reeves today to discuss expanding film production in west midlands not just in London.”

Keanu is thought to currently be in London working on sequel Bill & Ted 3, which is rumoured to be mostly set in the capital. The film will follow on from 1989's Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and 1991's Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, in which Keanu starred as Ted Theodore Logan opposite Alex Winter as Bill S. Preston, Esq.
