Pop star Katy Perry has had her fair share of high profile relationships, from her marriage to Russell Brand, to her recent romance with Orlando Bloom. But for six years Spencer Morrill believed he was Perry’s secret love after he became convinced he was exchanging emails and messages with the singer.

Appearing on MTV’s ‘Catfish: The TV Show’, Morrill explained that he had an "instant connection" with the singer after messaging her online. However all was not as it seemed and the ‘Catfish’ team later revealed that Morrill had been messaging a British woman named Harriet who had been posing as the singer.

Speaking about his feelings for ‘Katy’, Morrill said: "She's awesome. Katy's funnier than I am, she's smarter than I am. I don't know how many people give her credit for that, but she's very intelligent. Katy's full of life, huge heart."

Believing that Perry was in love with him, Morrill was unfazed by Katy’s marriage to Russell Brand or her relationship with John Mayer and her most recent romance with Orlando Bloom. He even spent 25% of his life savings to buy the multi-millionaire singer an engagement ring.

When the ‘Catfish’ team uncovered Harriet, the woman behind the messages she offered Morrill an apology. "I just got to a point to where I couldn’t imagine like not talking to you," she explained. "I’ve been through some tough times throughout the time we’ve been talking the past six years.

“Like my dad died two years ago... I’m like genuinely sorry. I can’t change what I did, but I understand that it was really wrong.” The real Katy Perry has not yet responded to the episode, which aired in the US on Thursday.
