Katie Couric's first week on the job as an afternoon talk show host looked mighty impressive. She managed to beat all of her competition on each of the five days of opening week and performed better than the three other debuting talk-show stars, Steve Harvey, Jeff Probst, and Ricki Lake. She also drew bigger audiences than some of her more established competitors such as Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, and Anderson Cooper. TVbytheNumbers.com pointed out that Couric's success was particularly impressive given the fact that her new show debuted amidst one of the most competitive landscapes in years for syndicated talkers. However, it may be too early to predict that she'll be able to succeed Oprah Winfrey as afternoon talk-show champ. She also drew impressive numbers when she debuted as anchor of the CBS Evening News in 2006.
