Apparently, "Rocknroll" isn't "flashy" enough. We reckon it's plain silly.
When actress Kate Winslet married Sir Richard Branson's nephew Ned Rocknroll, all eyes were on the couple to see whether Kate would finally take a new surname in honour of their marriage. Rocknroll, born Abel Smith, changed his name by deed poll in 2008 in favour of a more...rock 'n' roll sounding moniker.
Can You Blame Her? Really?
However, unsurprisingly, the Oscar-winning Titanic actress won't be looking to legally change her surname: not for her third marriage, not for any of them. To be fair to Ned, it's not a prejudice Winslet has against his unusual choice of name, rather a rule that she likes to stick to regardless of who she's married to.
"I was never going to change my name to Rocknroll," Winslet tells The Telegraph, "I've never changed my name to anything so I didn't see a reason to start now." She pointed out that her previous two husbands, Jim Threapleton and Sam Mendes, didn't impart their names upon her so why should she make an exception for Mr. Rocknroll?
Unfortunately For Ned, His Wife Won't Take His Surname.
Kate spoke of how she actually prefers her own, distinctive surname over all others. "I quite like Kate Winslet," she admitted, "in fact I think it's very flashy. I'm proud of my name because I'm one of three girls and we have one boy in our family so essentially the only person who is going to carry the name along is my brother and he doesn't have any children at the moment."
Kate and Ned married last December in a secret ceremony in New York after being given away by her best friend and Titanic co-star Leonardo DiCaprio; so secret that even Kate's parents weren't aware the wedding was happening. Kate already had two children from her other marriages and Ned was married to Viscount Cowdray's daughter Eliza Pearson when the pair met but they managed to foster a blossoming romance and now live together in West Sussex.
Kate Sticks With Her "Flashy" Surname.
"Of course I still believe in love. It's up there with great food and the love for one's child," said Kate, adding that her parents had been married for 40 years. She told of how she now felt "really happy" in life, adding that "things are wonderful."
Winslet is currently playing a single mother who is abandoned by her husband because she could not have any more children, in Labor Day which premieres at the London and Toronto film festivals before it opens in cinemas on the 14th January in the UK.
