Kanye West's lawyer has entered a not guilty plea to the two misdemeanour charges against him. West allegedly (although there is convincing video evidence and photographs) assaulted a photographer outside LAX airport in July.
Kanye West maintains he is not guilty of assaulting a photographer outside LAX in July. The incident, in which West was filmed allegedly attacking photographer Daniel Ramos, led to West being charged with assault and attempted grand theft auto.
Kanye West did not appear in court on Wednesday (6th November).
The suit was filed in September when West was forced to appear in court. Felony charges against West were dismissed, as reported by THR, but the two misdemeanour charges were to be pursued.
The 36-year-old rapper's lawyer entered a not guilty plea to the two misdemeanour charges on Wednesday morning (6th November) at a court in Los Angeles. If West is convicted of the offence, he could face a prison sentence of up to a year. In addition, the photographer has filed a separate civil lawsuit intending to sue West for assault and battery, should Ramos be successful West could face paying unspecified damages.
Watch the video footage obtained by TMZ:
The incident occurred on 19th July and TMZ caught the incident on camera. Ramos was, with a number of other photographers, filming West as he left LAX and asking if the rapper would speak to him. West angrily rounded on the photographer and can clearly be heard saying "I told you not to talk to me" and "What you're doing is trying to get me in trouble." He then, it appears from the film, grabbed hold of Ramos and attempted to take his camera. A police officer intervenes but not before Ramos was seemingly hurt as he was caught on camera limping off. According to reports, an ambulance was called and Ramos claims to have need crutches during the weeks after the incident.
West did not appear in court, something Ramos' lawyer commented on. Gloria Allred, the attorney representing Ramos, spoke to the awaiting press and stated:
"It's just interesting to me that one of the most visible people in the entire world, Kanye West, who seems to love the press when it comes to promoting his music, when it comes to promoting his relationships especially family relationships doesn't want to come to court. I understand that his tour was cancelled so I don't see why he couldn't have been here. He certainly had the right to be here today. But maybe he was concerned all of you [the press] would ask him questions, questions he's not prepared to answer at this time."
