Kanye West is just one of several well known stars to perform spurious concerts for cash.
Kanye West has reportedly performed at a wedding for the grandson of Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev this past Saturday night (August 31, 2013) which earned him a fee in the millions of dollars. The gig took place at Almaty's luxurious Grand Tulip Hotel in Kazakhstan.
According to TMZ.com, $3 million was paid to Kanye to perform at the wedding reception of Aysultan Nazarbayev and Alima Boranbayeva. Aysultan, 23, is the youngest son of President Nazarbayev's eldest daughter. The American artist performed a set that included hits such as 'You Can't Tell Me Nothing' which was captured by a wedding guest who later posted the short clip on her instagram account.
President Nursultan Nazarbayev has been surrounded by controversy in the past as concerns about abusing human rights and torture were surfaced which resulted in the Prime Minister David Cameron becoming the first British Prime Minister to make an official visit to Kazakhstan earlier this summer, according to The Guardian.
Kazakhstan has once tried to hire a high-profile artist before. In 2011 Sting was contacted to perform for Nazarbayev but later pulled out of the lucrative deal because of the President's alleged mistreatment of their oil workers and violating their human rights according to the BBC. Sting released a statement himself at the time, discussing the reasons why he cancelled the gig. "Hunger strikes, imprisoned workers and tens of thousands on strike represents a virtual picket line which I have no intention of crossing."
Kanye West may be unaware of the controversy surrounding Kazakhstan's President but as the rapper is known for his expensive tastes and has recently just became a father it isn't shocking that he wasn't hesitant in performing for a fee of $3 million.
