Kanye West has revealed the inspiration behind his range at Adidas was wanting to make more affordable clothing after witnessing looting during the London riots.
Kanye West's Adidas range was inspired by the London riots.
The 'Black Skinhead' rapper has revealed the reason he wanted to collaborate with the sports brand was to make fashionable clothing more readily available to people who can't afford high-end designer gear after witnessing looting during the riots that took place in London in August 2011.
He said of his new Yeezy Boost collection which he unveiled during New York Fashion Week on Thursday (12.03.15): ''I also just wanted to say a major influence was the London riots because I was living in London at that time and saw the way that the kids wanted the clothes and I didn't have the skill set to do the more inexpensive clothes.
''This designer said to me one time, we were looking at something online, 'This looks like a really bad couture designer that no one knows'. Think about the idea of a really terrible couture designer, which there are a lot of. I didn't have the skill set to do inexpensive clothes.
''Now I have a team of really, really great designers that speak in a very Apple, Pixar-type [way].''
The 37-year-old star - who has 20-month-old daughter North with wife Kim Kardashian West - went on to reveal he's always wanted to emulate the career of Apple founder Steve Jobs at high-street fashion chain Gap.
He told Style.com: ''One of my dreams was to be the head creative director of the Gap. I'd like to be the Steve Jobs of the Gap ... When I say Steve Jobs of the Gap, as I talk to the people at the Gap right now, I'm not talking about a capsule [collection]. I'm talking about full Hedi Slimane [Saint Laurent Paris creative director] creative control of the Gap is what I would like to do. And I can say this because it doesn't conflict with my Adidas contract.''
Kanye also confessed he admires the way in which US designer Ralph Lauren provides clothes people can wear in their everyday lives rather than just garments that look good on a runway.
He added: ''Ralph is the god. And that's all I want to say about Ralph.''
