Jay Z and Kanye West represent one of the longest-running, successful and high-profile working relationships in pop, with the two collaborating as far back as 15 years ago, but apparently all is not well between the two rap icons, with a source saying that, actually, Jay Z “can’t stand” Kanye.

This all started when Kanye spouted off about how disappointed he was that his old mentor Jay Z – real name Shawn Carter – hadn’t come to visit the family home in California in the aftermath of Kanye’s wife Kim being robbed in Paris, a terrifying ordeal that had seen her bound, gagged and threatened with a gun.

“Don't call me, after the robbery, and say 'how you feelin?' You wanna know how I'm feelin? Come by the house. Bring the kids by the house. Like we're brothers. Let's sit down,” the 38 year old rapper told his audience on his Saint Pablo live date in Seattle on Wednesday (October 19th).

They go all the way back to 2000, when Kanye produced a handful of Jay Z’s singles plus his iconic 2001 album The Blueprint. “I can't take this s*** bro. Our kids have never even played together,” Kanye continued.

The next day, however, a source close to Jay Z told Page Six that he and Kanye didn’t actually get on that well in the first place.

“Jay can’t stand him,” the source revealed. “He looks at him as this crazy, eccentric motherf***er he can tolerate in small doses… The reality is that Jay doesn’t want that much to do with him. He likes his own space and is private. They’re very much not the same person. Jay’s immediate circle is very insular, and Kanye is just a guy who always wants something in the spotlight.”

Even during their well-received Watch The Throne tour in 2011, he apparently put with Kanye because it was so lucrative. “There was so much money to be made. Jay was like, ‘I’m gonna knock this out. We’re going to do a tour to bring in millions of dollars. I can tolerate that.’”

The tension also apparently stems from an Apple Music / Tidal exclusivity rivalry, with Kanye wanting to work with Drake (one of Apple Music’s pin-ups and key collaborators) instead of with Jay Z again (the Tidal kingpin).
