What a year! He's King of the pop world right now: can one or two measly reviews take him down?
Justin Timberlake should rightly feel like king of the world this year: he's already got the year's biggest selling record under his belt after March's The 20/20 Experience but rather than rest on his laurels and head to Barbados for some downtime, the productive popstar immediately set to work making his follow-up, The 20/20 Experience 2 of 2.
JT prancing around in some water - why not?
By all estimations, 2 of 2 is in with a good chance of doing as well if not better than its counterpart after lead singles 'Take Back The Night' and 'TKO' stormed the charts. The two-part project is slickly produced and employs more of a disco pop sound than Justin has previously experimented with, drawing clear Michael Jackson comparisons.
2 of 2 is a whole lot darker than its predecessor and evokes the glamour and thrill of nightlife in NYC. Radio-ready hits are interspersed with longer exercises in that JT R&B/pop mix.
Though the Washington Post branded 2 of 2 as "a high gloss slog," the Toronto Star declared that the second album "provides more nutrition" than the first. Entertainment Weekly described JT as "a remarkable entertainer" and "an avatar of pure cool," stating that "the haymakers were saved for part 2" although some songs are a little long. Consequence of Sound stated that Part 2 is an indulgent experience though less so than its predecessor, and could even be veering towards the more self-indulgent.
Watch The Late Night #Hashtag Clip With Justin & Jimmy:
Despite the album's middling reviews, the 32 year-old star has shown that he has a fine sense of humor, even when it comes to laughing at himself. Timberlake appeared on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon in a skit with Fallon where they send up the notion of a hashtag by inserting the term and the accompanying interlocked figure gesture before every phrase they utter.
Justin's album release and just-announced news of an extensive European 2014 tour comes after his triumphant iTunes Festival concert where he debuted his new songs to fresh ears and brought his Michael Jackson dancing and 1920s stylings to London's Roundhouse. He's also starred in the recently released Runner Runner, a suspenseful crime drama, and cleaned up at this year's MTV VMAs where he reunited with his former 90s boyband, 'N Sync.
Negative reviewers step aside: Justin Timberlake's on a moonwalking mission to the stars and he's not going to stop for you.
