Justin Bieber never knows what women are thinking.

The 'Boyfriend' hitmaker - who previously dated Selena Gomez - may be known for his heartthrob status but he insists he still doesn't quite understand how women work.

Speaking about the inspiration for his latest track, 'What Do You Mean', he said: ''I wrote the song for women in general.

''Here's the thing - I just never know what women are thinking because they say one thing and mean another thing and they're like, 'Do this, no don't do this.' And I'm like, 'What do you mean?' Or they're like kissing you and push you off. And then I'm like, 'Why? What's going on?'''

The 21-year-old singer - who admitted he was ''single and ready to mingle'' despite rumours he is dating model Xenia Deli - also revealed he feels most comfortable when he's on stage.

Speaking on 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show' about his performance of the track at the MTV Video Music Awards last month, he added: ''It felt so great just to be back up on that stage. I just feel so much more comfortable there than anywhere else.''

Meanwhile, Justin recently opened up about why he teared up following his performance at the ceremony.

He explained: ''It was just so overwhelming for me, everything, just the performance - I missed some cues so I was a little disappointed at that - and just everyone, just the support. Honestly, I just wasn't expecting them to support me in the way they did. Last time I was at an award show I was booed.''
