Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s career in front of the camera has gone from strength to strength, with leading roles in films like ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘Inception’ cementing his position as one of Hollywood’s current golden boys.
However, the actor also has ambitions behind the camera too, as proved by his new film Don Jon’s Addiction. Gordon-Levitt directs the film – as well as writing and starring in it - about a character called Jon. An attractive man who can’t maintain a relationship owing to his addiction to pornography, Jon meets a woman obsessed with romance and Hollywood love films, and also an emotionally fragile widow – played by Scarlett Johansson and Julianne Moore respectively. "I wanted to tell a love story, and in my observations, what gets in the way of love most the time is how people objectify each other," Gordon-Levitt told Reuters.
He was also keen to enforce that the film wasn’t about pornography, or a commentary on addiction to it. "I wasn't really focused on porn or porn addiction” he said. “It was really, to me, more of a metaphor. It is astonishing how prevalent it is in our culture today." Gordon-Levitt went on to say that he found inspiration for the film’s humor on social networking. "If you go on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, and you look at the humor on there, you might call it smutty, you might call it raunchy, but there's also a sort of honesty to it," he commented.
