WWE superstar John Cena has granted his 500th Make-a-Wish, becoming the first celebrity to hit the milestone. The pro wrestler surprised 8 year old fan Rocco Lanzer, who is battling leukaemia, on Thursday’s edition of the 'Today Show' presenting him with gifts and ringside seats to Monday night’s edition of Raw.

“No other person, celebrity or otherwise, has granted more wishes than he has,” Make-A-Wish spokesman Josh deBerge said in an interview on Friday. “Not only has he granted more wishes than anyone else,  John repeatedly grants amazing wishes every time he meets a wish kid.”

The wrestler granted his first Make-a-Wish in 2004 and in 2009, he received the organisation’s Chris Greicius Celebrity Award, given to those celebrities who have shown outstanding commitment to wish-granting. In 2012 he granted his 300th wish and 2014 came his 400th. Each time he was the first celebrity to reach the milestone.

Speaking to the Associated Press on Friday Cena said, “I’ll drop everything. If I can offer a fantastic experience, I’ll be first in line to do my part. They certainly deserve a day as a real kid.”

‘‘I want them to have an experience that will stay with them to forever,’’ the champ added. ‘‘I don’t ever want the children or their families to be treated in a way where they feel as if they’re up against anything at all.’’
