Author Jk Rowling turned a normal Saturday night book club meeting in Orkney upside down when she made a surprise appearance after spotting the event on twitter. Rowling traveled 300 miles from her home in Edinburgh to the remote Scottish island, to partake in a discussion of her crime novel The Cuckoo’s Calling.

Rowling first spotted the event on twitter, Friday, telling the Orkney Library ‘that sounds like a fun event.’ Trying to tempt the author or her alter-ego Robert Galbraith to turn up, the library then asked Rowling what her favourite type of cake was (it’s lemon drizzle cake).

Of course no one actually expected Rowling to turn up and the library’s crime fans, named the Saturday Slaughters’, were left stunned when she actually appeared.

“It really was quite unbelievable. We’d heard a rumour earlier that she had arrived in Orkney and then all of a sudden she was there,” senior library assistant Stewart Bain said.

"I think it’s fantastic that she came all the way here to see us and shows the level of support and passion that she has for her readers.” Rowling spent over an hour chatting to the group about her novel and was then given a tour of the library.

After her visit Rowling tweeted, “I had the best time! Thanks for wonderful chat.” The author also included a photo of her holding an organic gardening book by ‘Coronation Street’ actress Thelma Barlow, which she later explained was an Orkney Library ‘in-joke and one of many reasons to love the place!’
