Eddie Redmayne plays Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts
As you no doubt already know, 'Fantastic Beasts' is a spin-off tale from Jk Rowling's Harry Potter series and based on her book of the same name which is also a textbook used by Harry and his friends in their first year at Hogwarts, listing the various magical creatures of the wizarding world and the amount of risk they pose if encountered. Following his stint on the last four Harry Potter movies, David Yates returns as director, while this also marks Rowling's screenwriting debut. It's the first in a trilogy which will continue in 2018 and 2020.
Magizoologist and Ministry of Magic employee Newt Scamander is obsessed with dangerous magical creatures, a passion that led to him being expelled from Hogwarts, though one of his teachers - Albus Dumbledore - argued strongly against his dismissal. And no wonder - he is truly brilliant, if eccentric and rather impulsive. He takes a trip to North America in 1926 to continue research for his book 'Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them', smuggling his collection of intriguing beasts past the No-Majs (Muggles) in a magical briefcase.

Unfortunately, things don't go smoothly; indeed, his meeting at the Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA) in New York is interrupted by many of the creatures escaping from his case after an accidental mishap with a No-Maj factory worker called Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler), forcing the angered and terrified American wizarding community to set out to arrest him. Leading those assigned to track down the escaped Newt is top auror Percival Graves (Colin Farrell), who will stop at nothing to find his bounty. It's not only the magical creatures they've got to deal with though, it's the effect this will have on magical and non-magical relations; a disastrous prospect when one considers the wizard-hating radicals out there already like the New Salem Philanthropic Society. This terrorist organisation was set up to expose and destory witches and wizards and is led by the merciless Mary-Lou (Samantha Morton) whose adopted son, Credence (Ezra Miller), becomes a sort of rival to Newt.
Harry Potter director David Yates returns for Fantastic Beasts
If he wants to avoid some serious legal consequences at the hands of MACUSA president Seraphina Picquery (Carmen Ejogo), Newt will have to put things right and return his collection of magical beasts to the safety of his briefcase. Helping him is MACUSA employee Porpentina 'Tina' Goldstein (Katherine Waterston), who die-hard Harry Potter fans will know as Newt's future wife. Her sister is Queenie Goldstein (Alison Sudol); a kind soul with an impressive talent at legilimency which will no doubt come in use in Newt's mission.
Other characters we can expect to meet are Modesty (Faith Wood-Blagrove), a young girl with a remarkable talent of being able to see into people in a similar way to Queenie; Henry Shaw, Sr. (Jon Voight), a US senator; Gnarlack (Ron Perlman), a goblin gangster who owns a bar; and Chastity (Jenn Murray), whose role is as yet unknown.
'Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them' is set to be released in theatres on November 18th 2016.
