According to THR, Sony Pictures ‘aggressively picked up the project in a competitive situation’, with interest from other studios including Warner Bros, Fox 2000, Annapurna and Paramount.

The film will centre on how Lorenz met and began her affair with Castro in 1959, just weeks after the Cuban Revolution ended. The affair began when Lorenz was just 19 years old, but their romance ended after she became pregnant and had an abortion.

Lorenz then left Cuba and joined anti-communists in the U.S., where later she was recruited by the CIA for an assassination mission. In 1960 she returned to Cuba to try and poison Castro on behalf of the CIA, but decided not to go through with it.
