The bets have been made.
Jay-Z is an entrepreneur through and through – there’s no argument about it. And with the success of Rocawear, several multi-platinum records, the 40/40 club in NYC and several rapping careers launched through his own label Def Jam... need we say more? So does this mean Apple should quake in fear, now that Mr Carter has put his money (and his mouth) behind Samsung, a move tied with the release of his fifteenth (no that’s not a typo) studio album.
With $5 million dollars in his pocket, Mr Carter certainly has plenty to smile about.
Magna Carta Holy Grail is due for release on July 4th and, get this, the album will be released (initially at least) via a smartphone app, available only to Samsung users. Oh and did we forget to mention that Magna Carta will be available to Galaxy users for free? Samsung reportedly purchased 1 million copies of the album for $5 a piece, so that they could obtain the rights to give out the freeby to their customers, MTV reports.
Of course, those out of the inner circle, aka non-Galaxy users, will also be able to get their hands on the record – three days later, for the full price. Now that is one huge endorsement deal. Knowing the enterpreneur’s previous history with getting brands off the ground, and the huge investment that this deal presens, on both sides, perhaps Apple really do have something to be nervous about.
Oh, and let's not forget 40/40.
"One pattern with Jay-Z and a lot of the companies that he does deals with is that they're basically trying to buy cool. A lot of the time he goes with brands that are not necessarily the #1 in the category," says Zack O'Malley Greenburg, Forbes magazine senior editor and author of "Empire State of Mind: How Jay-Z Went From Street Corner to Corner Office." So if the deal ends up working out for Samsung, that would mean that every inspirational high school movie ever has been wrong and you can actually buy cool – as long as you’re buying it from Jay-Z.
His recent appearance on The Great Gatsby soundtrack set the stage for bigger musical endeavours.
