The critics agree, Enough Said is a poignant goodbye to the legendary actor
For a man who rarely spoke; kept his business private and was always described as a warm, caring man, starring in a poignant, romantic comedy called Enough Said was the perfect way to end an enigmatic, brilliant career.
James Gandolfini's sudden passing happened in Italy due to a heart attack
The critics have warmed to the romantic comedy, praising its fresh take on the tired genre. It sees two fifty-somethings attempting to date, while ex-wives, weight problems and self-confidence all put up staunch barriers.
“As Etta James might say: at last. A romantic comedy that is romantic and funny and not simply an insult to the intelligence of all carbon-based life forms,” wrote The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw.
James Mottram of Total Film called Enough said, “Assured, adult filmmaking from a writer/director who knows her way around the ups and downs of relationships. It's also a fitting tribute to the talent of the gentle, grizzly Gandolfini.”
Empire’s Ian Freer said it was “A charming, big-hearted movie and a fitting valediction to a much-mourned actor.”
Julia Louis-Dreyfus at the BFI premiere of Enough Said
All these positive reviews have culminated in a hugely impressive 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, who arrived at that score by totting up 131 reviews.
"It's bitter sweet, I really wish that he could be here standing next to me," Julia Louis-Dreyfus said of Gandolfini. "Having said that though, I think this movie is a celebration of his enormous talent and it's really a triumph and a lovely thing for his legacy. I'm so proud to have been in this film with him. She added: "You can see his abilities were very deep. He was an amazing actor. In fact this part that he plays is much closer to him than Tony Soprano was, in so many ways, which I think will be nice for his fans to see."
