Rock icon Jack White has announced the cancellation of all of his remaining dates on the Mexican leg of his current tour following the death of one of his band members. Keyboardist Isaiah ‘Ikey’ Owens was found dead in his hotel room in Puebla, aged 38. The cause of his death is yet to be established.

California-born Owens was a member of White’s backing band The Buzzards who had supported him live since 2012, when White’s first solo album Blunderbuss was being promoted. They were due to play two further dates in Guadalajara and Monterrey in support of Lazaretto, released earlier this year, but they have now been cancelled.

A statement on the websites of both White and his record label Third Man said "It is with great sadness that we tell the world of the passing of the incredible musician Isaiah 'Ikey' Owens. He will be missed and loved forever by his family, friends, bandmates and fans. Out of respect for Ikey, the remaining shows of the Jack White Tour in Mexico have been cancelled. We will all miss you Ikey. You were and are an incredible artist."

Owens was a member of many other bands in addition being an accomplished session musician. In 2009, he won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance as part of the backing band for The Mars Volta, an elaborate prog-metal spin-off group from alternative legends At The Drive-In. He performed on all of their albums from 2002 to 2008, as well as on recods by Mastodon and Reel Big Fish. He also formed his own band Free Moral Agents in California following The Mars Volta’s split.

The president of the Recording Academy Neil Portnow also extended his condolences, saying that Owens had a gift for "creating and experimenting with new and distinctive tones".

The remaining dates of the Lazaretto tour are unaffected.
