Hugh Laurie still can't believe he got the chance to perform with his heroes, Tom Jones and DR. John, as part of a new TV music special - and he's sure they must have hated the experience.
The success of the House star's debut album Let Them Talk prompted network bosses at America's Pbs to set up a concert for Laurie - and invite Jones and Dr. John to join him onstage.
The TV special, Let Them Talk - A Celebration of New Orleans Blues, will air as part of Pbs' upcoming Great Performances series, and Laurie admits he'll have to watch just to make sure the show wasn't just a dream he had.
He tells WENN, "Sharing a room with my heroes, I mean... Who the hell do I think I am sharing a room with them? But everyone was incredibly generous. I was not made to feel, either by the musicians I was playing with or by those singers, for one second unqualified or unwelcome.
"I'm sure there were moments when they were, behind my back, rolling their eyes, going, 'Oh, we're going to be here all night.' But, if they did, they never showed it to me. All of them were incredibly generous.
"Tom Jones could not be a more gentlemanly soul, a kinder presence to spend time with, and Dr. John, who I have worshipped since I was a small boy, has a slightly sort of ornery streak to him, which I love. But it does make him slightly scary, and I was thinking, 'Well, this could go any number of different ways, this experience'. But he, too, was incredibly generous, and he was funny and kind, and he took time, and he was just an absolute delight to be with."
