Warner Bros. is aiming high with Man of Steel, but so far the film's earnings justify expectations.
The new Superman reboot “Man of Steel” is doing remarkably well at the box office this weekend. Shocking! Who could have assumed that people would want to see a new Superman flick, and one of the most hiped up movies of the year at that? The Zack Snyder-directed flick pulled in earnings of $113 million over the weekend, which puts it at the second earning spot this year, after Disney’s Iron Man 3, Bloomberg reports.

According to the publication, this would mean that Warner Bros. has found a new superhero franchise to replace The Dark Knight trilogy, which ended last year. And the shoe certainly fits. Man of Steel is the brainchild of the same team, which was behind the Dark Knight films – Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer penned the script for the Zack Snyder helmer. This could also be a stepping stone to the big goal for Time Warner – a movie about DC’s Justice League, uniting Superman and a number of other DC Superheroes into a single film. This will follow the model, set by Marvel’s Avengers (the third top grossing movie of all time) and probably earn a lot of money for the studio.
“That’s where the big money will be if they can get a ‘Justice League’ movie off the ground in the next two or three years,” said Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitor Relations Co. “That’s the pattern fans seem to like.”
Which, admittedly, seems true. However, a lot of stars had to align for the success of the Avengers and that includes Marvel taking a risk on a somewhat fringe director in the face of nerd god Joss Whedon, who, along with the near perfect casting of the movie, contributed in huge part to its success.
Looks like Snyder is set to make a lot of money for Warner.
