Gwyneth Paltrow has taken to Instagram to show off a make-up free selfie to mark her 44th birthday on Tuesday afternoon.

“#Nomakeup for my 44th birthday, embracing my past and future,” she shared with her fans on social media yesterday (September 27th). “Thank you for the instalove #goopgoesmakeupfree @goop.”

The actress and mother of two, who divorced her ex-husband Chris Martin, lead singer of Coldplay, last year after the infamous ‘conscious uncoupling’ they announced in 2014, has been openly discussing her beauty routines in interviews as well as her books.

She recently revealed that she isn’t too enthusiastic about make-up at the best of times, meaning that her make-up free look might be one we see a bit more of in the future.

“I often go out with just mascara and a little cheek. I don't use bronzer,” she told the New York Times back in April this year in an interview that included an admission that she sometimes lets bees sting her. “You need technique to use bronzer, highlighter and BB cream, all these things my daughter tells me about.”

Paltrow’s advice to readers and fans is to avoid any products that are toxic or have too many chemicals in them – and that this should extend to sunscreens as well. “I only use mineral sunscreens, never the chemicals one,” she advised. “I don't understand why anyone would put on carcinogens.”

She has also recently revealed that she wants her new beauty and cosmetics ranges to be commercially successful in the future, but is frustrated that her brands are too often bound up with her lifestyle website Goop, which often comes in for mockery from cynics for its content.

“More and more, I would like it to be its own brand,” she explained earlier this year. “My dream is that one day no one will remember that I had anything to do with it.”
