The actress and Goop founder was challenged by celebrity chef Mario Batali.
Gwyneth Paltrow has accepted the challenge laid down by celebrity chef Mario Batali to live on a $29 food stamp budget for one week. The actress announced her participation in the #FoodBankNYCChallenge on Thursday, posting a picture to twitter of her week’s shop.
Gwyneth will attempt to live on just $29 a week.
"This is what $29 gets you at the grocery store—what families on SNAP (i.e. food stamps) have to live on for a week," the actress captioned a photo of her shop, which included black beans, eggs, lettuce, peas brown rice and celery.
The challenge is intended to raise awareness about the small $29-per-week grocery budget that families relying on the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) live on. "Congress cut food stamps twice since 2013, and soup kitchens and food pantries saw an immediate increase in visitors," writes the NYC food bank's fundraising page.

According to The Hollywood Reporter those who participate in the program have the ability to use coupons, but cannot use food provided by others or already in their home.

Paltrow later told her twitter followers, "We're walking in their shoes to see how far we get," before nominating chef Roy Choi to take the challenge next.
Writing on the Food Bank NYC website Chef Mario Batali (who nominated Gwyneth) explained the challenge by saying, “For one week, walk in someone else’s shoes. Knowledge is power and by truly understanding what our friends and neighbours are going through we will be better equipped to find solutions.”
