Antony described the couple's separation as "sad and upsetting" especially for "our two grandchildren" but appeared supportive of the pair, adding "I am very proud of what they have achieved in their lives".

The retired accountant is aware of the difficulties of divorce as he separated from his wife of 30 years three years ago. On the topic of marriage he said "If you are married you know you have good days and bad days. We all have our ups and downs".

Antony did not mention whether extra marital relationships were not the cause of his son and daughter-in-law's separation and, when asked, stated "I don't know anything about that". There have been numerous rumours, as the NY Daily News reports, suggesting the couple had an "open relationship" for some time and pictures taken last September appear to show Paltrow kissing her old flame Donovan Leitch.

It seems the couple have been on trial separation for a year but have finally decided to split. They were keen to emphasis in their statement their continued closeness, writing: "We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been".

Martin and Paltrow certainly appear to be continuing as a family for the time being and have been spending time in the Bahamas in order to avoid press attention following their announcement. As US Weekly reports, the couple and their two children - Apple, 9 and Moses, 7 - headed to the Bahamas ahead of the announcement and have been staying at an exclusive secluded residence. Sources suggest when all four are together "they appear to be one big happy family with no cares in the world", whilst there may be some tensions when Paltrow and Martin are alone. They were keen to emphasise their continued commitment to their two children and family life in the statement which read "we are parents first and foremost, to two incredibly wonderful children and we ask for their and our space and privacy to be respected at this difficult time".
