Gerard Butler has signed on for the Olympus Has Fallen sequel, titled London Has Fallen, which will hit theaters on October 2, 2015. U.S distribution rights to the sequel have been acquired by Focus Features, the company announced on Thursday (May 1, 2014), via the Hollywood Reporter.

The movie sees Butler return as a former Secret Service agent, though the sequel will focus on the death of the British Prime Minister "under mysterious circumstances."

Focus is yet to announce whether Aaron Eckhart will reprise his role as the president of the United States or Morgan Freeman will return as Speaker Allan Tumbell, though given the narrative of the sequel, it's probably unlikely.

Olympus Has Fallen was a huge success for Film District in 2013, grossing over $160 million worldwide on a budget of $70 million. Antoine Fuqua was the man behind the camera on that occasion, though it's unclear whether he will return.

The movie was one of two movies - the other being Sony's box-office disappointment White House Down - released within month of each other that depicted the invasion of a White House. 

The sequel will be written by Olympic Has Fallen writer Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt, along with Christian Gudegast.

The first movie didn't bowl over the critics, but as Dave Sexton of This is London wrote at the time: "Reactionary fantasy, then - but what else are action films for?"
