George Lucas says he has been waiting for the Blu-ray Disc format to prove itself before releasing his Star Wars films in the high-definition standard. In an interview with the New York Times , Lucas said, "We've been wanting to do it as soon as we possibly could, but we just wanted to do it when enough people would be able to buy it and see it." Lucas said that all six of the sci-fi movies will be released on Blu-ray Disc in the fall of 2011 and will include documentary features and never-before-seen footage. He noted that when he released the original trilogy on VHS in the early 1980s, when home video was just becoming popular, "we sold 300,000 copies ... so we learned from that experience that if you're too early in the marketplace, there's just not enough demand for it." The Times noted that there are currently 19.4 million Blu-ray players in the U.S.
