Frank Ocean has explained why he did not submit his latest album Blonde for consideration at the 2017 Grammy Awards.

In a interview with the New York Times, Ocean said he felt the Grammys were not doing a good job at representing black artists, and decided to have his ‘Colin Kaepernick moment’ and not submit the album.

"That institution certainly has nostalgic importance," he said. ”It just doesn't seem to be representing very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down.

"I think the infrastructure of the awarding system and the nomination system and screening system is dated," he added.

”I'd rather this be my Colin Kaepernick moment for the Grammys than sit there in the audience."

Colin Kaepernick is the San Francisco 49ers quarterback who drew national attention when he decided to protest during performances of 'The Star Spangled Banner' at games, at first by sitting on the ground and then by kneeling.

Explaining the reason behind his protest, Kaepernick said in August: "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.

"To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."
