'Lee Daniels' The Butler' has remained at the top of the US Box Office for the second consecutive week. 'We're the Millers' has also retained its position at no.2 for the third week.
Lee Daniels' The Butler has retained its position at No.1 in the US Weekend Box Office for the second week. The movie is an historical epic which follows the true story of Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker), a black butler who served at the White House through the offices of eight presidents. Whitaker is supported by a cast of award winning actors including Oprah Winfrey, Alan Rickman, Josh Cusack and Robin Williams.

This weekend Lee Daniels' The Butler may not have been, financially, as successful as last weekend. It made over $17 million this week as opposed to the $25 million it earned in its opening weekend. Meanwhile We're the Millers, starring Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis, made $13 million down from $17 million last weekend. The comedy made a similar amount to The Butler in its opening weekend ($26 million) yet has continued, by comparison, to be more financially profitable.

Three new-comers to the charts have not fared as well as their various studios had anticipated. One in particular is The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, the movie follows a group of teenage warriors who protect the world from evil forces we mere mortals are unable to see. In reviews, City of Bones has been hailed as a poor imitation of the Twilight Saga, drawing on a number of popular but not terribly original genres. The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones stars Lily Collins (Mirror Mirror); Jamie Campbell Bower (The Twilight Saga); Kevin Zegers (Gossip Girl); Jemima West (The Borgias); and Robert Sheehan (Misfits). In its opening weekend, the fantasy movie has gained third position. This must come as something of a disappointment to its studio considering another film, entitled City of Ashes, is due to begin filming in September.

The other two new-comers are British comedy The Worlds End, starring Nick Frost and Simon Pegg, which gained fourth place; and horror You're Next at seventh. Long term features in the chart includes animation Planes, fantasy Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters and action Elysium. Strangely, Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine, had fallen from the top 10 to 14th place, this week it has undergone something of a revival by reaching ninth position in the weekend chart. Kick-Ass 2 has had a truly disappointing weekend, falling to tenth place from fifth in its opening weekend.
