Elton John's tour of Russia is ''on the verge of collapse'' because of his plans to show support for the gay community.
Elton John's tour of Russia could be cancelled due to 'gay propaganda' being banned in the country.
Sir Elton is set to perform at the Crocus City Hall in Moscow on Friday (06.12.13) along with a second date in Kazan on Saturday, but a source has told The Times newspaper the gigs are ''on the verge of collapse'' because of his plans to show support for the gay community.
Speaking to The Guardian newspaper in September, the musician said: ''I'm supposed to be going to Moscow in December. I've got to go. And I've got to think about what I'm going to say very carefully.
''There's two avenues of thought: do you stop everyone going, ban all the artists coming in from Russia? But then you're really leaving the men and women who are gay and suffering under the anti-gay laws in an isolated situation.
''As a gay man, I can't leave those people on their own without going over there and supporting them.''
The 66-year-old performer is in a civil union with partner David Furnish and the couple have two sons, Zachary, who turns three this month, and nine-month-old Elijah, who were both born by the same surrogate mother.
He added: ''I don't know what's going to happen [at the gigs], but I've got to go.''
Elton has campaigned for gay rights in Britain and the Ukraine and was denied the right to adopt a child in 2009 because of his age and marital status.
'Promoting homosexuality' is an offence in several Russian regions, including Krasnodar, St Petersburg, and Novosibirsk.
