Sir Elton John brightened an otherwise gloomy morning slog for commuters at London’s St. Pancras railway station yesterday, as he performed a few songs on a piano that he ended up donating to the station.

Delighted onlookers crowded round as the British pop icon wheeled the piano into the middle of the concourse on Thursday morning (February 4th). He performed a brief medley of some of his best-known songs, including a sing-along-inducing ‘Tiny Dancer’, before signing the piano: “Enjoy this piano. It's a gift. Love, Elton John.”

He captured the moment on Instagram, captioning the photo of his performance: “Surprise!! I popped into St Pancras International to christen the Yamaha piano which I donated to the station. Now everyone can have a play.”

He then took a picture of the signature, writing “My gift is my song and this piano's for you,” a reference to his early hit ‘Your Song’, as the caption.

Sir Elton only played the piano and chose not to sing, letting the assembled fans do that for him. Onlooker Ruth Swailes told The Guardian later on in the day: “A colleague and I were just walking through the station and there was a bit of a crowd, then everyone started clapping and cheering. Elton sat down and started playing 'Tiny Dancer'. He didn’t sing, played for about five minutes, then got up and walked away, all very low key.”

Pretty soon, videos and photographs started appearing all over social media documenting the special performance.

The unusual public appearance coincides with the release of Sir Elton’s brand new 32nd album, Wonderful Crazy Night, released on February 5th.
