Ellen Degeneres has helped a terminally ill aspiring comedian land his own HBO comedy special. Quincy Jones, was diagnosed with stage 4 mesothelioma cancer in July was given a year to live. The 32-year-old is currently undergoing chemotherapy and had been raising funds to tape a stand-up special via a Kickstarter campaign.

Jones’ Kickstarter first caught Degeneres’ eye earlier this month and last week he appeared on her show to talk more about the campaign. On Monday Jones was back and this time the talk show host had some very special news for him.

"Here's the thing that you mentioned last time, you want to do a comedy special," DeGeneres told Jones. "So what you don't know [is that] we called the head of HBO. And your people didn't even tell you this, but HBO is going to air your special."

While the audience erupted with cheers, Jones couldn't quite get his head around what he’d just heard. "You're lying. Are you serious? Are you?" he said, before the news sunk in.

"All the negotiations have been happening, your people know that, but they kept it from you because we wanted to surprise you," DeGeneres continued. "Oh my God. That's the best surprise," Jones said. "Thank you so much."

"Yeah, it's great. HBO was like, 'Yes, of course we'll air it!' " DeGeneres replied. Jones will tape the special at the Teragram Ballroom in Los Angeles on April 4 and it will air on HBO in the spring.

DeGeneres also told Jones that Shutterfly, who had previously donated $10,000 to his Kickstarter campaign, will be giving another $15,000 to finish producing the special.
