More than a year after his death, the David Bowie vaults are being opened, with two albums’ worth of unreleased material set to be released next month in time for this year’s Record Store Day.

For hard-bitten fans, however, there’s set to be intense competition to get hold of these releases, with both albums being limited editions for the tenth anniversary of RSD in April.

Cracked Actor (Live in Los Angeles 1974) is the first release, a three-album set recorded on the September 1974 Philly Dogs tour – some songs of which appeared in the famous BBC documentary ‘Cracked Actor’. It appears on five sides of vinyl in a 3xLP set, with the sixth side featuring an etching of Bowie.

It is different from the official release of the concerts, which were captured on the David Live album of the same year. Some tracks have feature a different backing band (including the legendary Luther Vandross) and a setlist that includes tracks written for The Gouster, an abandoned record that later turned into 1975’s Young Americans and which was featured on the Who Can I Be Now? box set in mid-2016.

The second release, titled Bowpromo, is a single LP’s worth of alternate versions of songs recorded in 1971 that would be re-recorded to feature on Hunky Dory the same year and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars in 1972.

Unlike Cracked Actor, which has never been released, Bowpromo is an existing rarity in Bowie’s catalogue. It is believed that fewer than 500 copies were pressed when it was distributed to music industry insiders and journalists in 1971, just a year or so before Bowie broke big.

Record Store Day, which aims to promote independent record stores and is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2017, is set for April 22nd.
