The Oscars 2013 nominations are in! As expected, Daniel Day Lewis is named amongst the list for Best Lead Actor, but surprise nominations for Bradley Cooper and Joaquin Phoenix shuffle the deck nicely.
It all happened so fast: months of speculation, buzz-talk and predictions for 10 minutes of average jokes from Seth McFarlane and Emma Stone. But here they are, the Oscar 2013 nominations are in, so now at least the predictions will be slightly more accurate.
Before we go on, here are the Best Lead Actor nominees in full.
Daniel Day-Lewis - Lincoln
Denzel Washington - Flight
Hugh Jackman - Les Miserables
Bradley Cooper - Silver Linings Playbook
Joaquin Phoenix - The Master
Some interesting picks in there for sure. Bradley Cooper sticks out for his performance in Silver Linings, will this be his 'breakthrough year'? (for the 99th time of asking). Joaquin Phoenix, considering his very public snubbing of the Academy, is also a surprising pick considering he has little chance of winning, especially up against the clear favourite, Daniel Day Lewis for his turn as Abraham Lincoln.
Notable omissions were Daniel Craig for Skyfall, which has been one of the most successful films of the year, as well as being touted the best Bond ever. This snub continues the tradition of Oscar-pain for 007, and Christian Bale will have been harbouring a secret confidence for his performance as Batman in The Dark Knight Rises.
