Christopher Nolan's sci-fi epic Interstellar, which divided critics earlier this year though won acclaim for its innovative techniques, has been voted 2014's most overrated movie by users on review aggregating website Metacritic. For the fifth straight year, the website invited users to list their favourite movies, games, TV shows, albums and songs of the past calendar year.

Richard Linklater's Oscar-frontrunner Boyhood was the highest scoring new movie in Metacritic history, while Nolan's Interstellar finished second (but more on that later). Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Edge of Tomorrow, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and horror hit The Babadook closed out the Top 10.

At the other end of the scale, Interstellar also received the most votes for "most overrated movie of 2014" - a ignominious accolade that many critics would agree with.

"Interstellar is thrilling to watch across its moments but ultimately unmemorable; I feel it slipping away from me even now," said Andrew O'Hehir of Salon.com.

BoyhoodBoyhood was voted top movie by Metacritic, but also second most overrated. Go figure.

Bizarrely, Boyhood was second on the list of most overrated movies, while the surprise hit Guardians of the Galaxy came third. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay was named the fourth most overrated movie of the year, while Inarritu's spectacular Birdman was voted in fifth place.

In the separate category of "worst movies of 2014", it was mainly arthouse and independent fare that got a battering. Only Lovers Left Alive finished top, while Force Majeure, Mr Turner, Two Days, One Night, Goodbye to Language and The Immigrant also made the list.

In the other categories, Metacritic's official game of the year for 2014 was Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, while Game of Thrones was named best TV show (closely followed by True Detective). St Vincent' self-titled album was named the year's best record, while Seasons (Waiting on You) by Future Islands was quite rightly named Best Song.
