This year Guardians of the Galaxy swooped into theatres and saved the summer box office, taking over $654 million worldwide. Now Disney is hoping they can transfer some of Guardian’s box office magic to the small screen, with a new animated series to air on their XD channel.

The announcement was made by Marvel on Friday (October 10) at New York Comic-Con’s panel. They revealed the series would begin 'sometime' in 2015, before premiering test footage to lucky audience members.

“This is a very exciting time for the Marvel Animation Studio,” Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Executive Vice President, Head of Television, said in a statement. “After starring in the biggest movie of 2014, everyone wants more of Star-Lord and his crew. Now, they’ll get it.”

It is believed the series will carry on from the movie and feature Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot and of course Rocket Raccoon.

The series will add to Marvel’s block of programming on the channel, which includes the successful 'Avengers Assemble' animated series.

On Monday (October 13th), another successful franchise will premiere a new series as Lucasfilm’s 'Star Wars Rebels' finally hits.

With successful partnerships with Lucasfilm and Marvel already in the bag Gary Marsh, president of Disney Channels Worldwide told fans there are “more exciting collaborations in the pipeline."

As for Guardians hitting the big screen again, Marvel have already announced that a sequel to the first film is scheduled for 2017. But soon fan's appetites will be satisfied with the new animated series.
