The blockbuster sequel, starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, scored the second-best box office domestic debut in Hollywood history, behind 2012's The Avengers, with $204.5 million (£127.8 million).

Showing appreciation for the film's massive success, Pratt writes on Facebook.com, "On behalf of everyone involved in the making of ‪#‎JurassicWorld‬, and believe me there are thousands of us, I want to say thank you.

"It feels so wonderful to hear the overwhelmingly positive response. We are incredibly blessed and overcome with joy at the outcome of the movie and couldn't be more appreciative for the amazing support you've shown so far. This is bigger than all of us. Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

Pratt has also revealed he is signed on for a sequel to the blockbuster movie.

Meanwhile, trailing far behind in the film's tracks is Spy, which comes in second with $16 million (£10 million).

San Andreas, Insidious: Chapter 3 and Pitch Perfect 2 round out the top five, respectively.
