The box office performance of Jurassic World continues to go from strength to strength, with the news that the dinosaur blockbuster has overtaken The Avengers to become the third highest-earning movie of all time, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Featuring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, and directed by Colin Trevorrow, it has now taken $1.522 billion at worldwide theaters in the six weeks since its release on June 12th. This nudges it very slightly ahead of the Marvel smash, which took $1.52 billion overall in 2012.

This leaves only Titanic and Avatar ahead of it, though they are some considerable distance out of reach of Jurassic World. Titanic topped out at $2.19 billion in 1997, while Avatar took an astonishing $2.79 billion.

Another 2015 movie is in the Top Five – Furious 7 is in fifth with takings over $1.511 billion. With highly anticipated movies in the form of Spectre and Star Wars: The Force Awakens also due to drop in 2015, there’s no guarantee that Jurassic World will be in the Top Three this time next year.

However, it would now appear that Jurassic World 2 is a sure-fire thing, though Trevorrow has already confirmed that he won’t be signing on to helm it if it gets the green light. Chris Pratt, however, has already confirmed that he’s already locked into multiple sequels if they happen.

Jurassic World has revived the popular Jurassic Park franchise, 14 years after the last instalment in 2001, the critically derided Jurassic Park III. The original 1993 film, directed by Steven Spielberg, remains one of the most popular blockbusters ever, sitting in 18th place in the aforementioned all-time list with takings of $1.029 billion including the 20th anniversary re-release in 2013.
