Charlize Theron has described her difficult relationship with co-star Tom Hardy during the nine months they spent together filming Mad Max: Fury Road in 2014. Theron said the pair struggled with each other on set, but added that she believes it was probably more due to the characters they were playing.

“From what I hear, he’s not like THAT on every movie - I hear he’s had good experiences,” she told Wall Street Journal Magazine. "Maybe the movie is what it is because we struggled so much with each other, and those characters had to struggle so much with each other.”

“If we were chum-chum, maybe the movie would have been 10 times worse.” Theron’s claims were then backed up by the film's director George Miller who described what it was like on set with them. “I’m not saying that they were seething right through, but the trajectory of the characters can’t help but seep into the work,” Miller said.

However despite their uneasy relationship, Hardy did surprise his co-star with a gift once filming wrapped. The actor gave Theron a self-portrait with a note which read: "You are an absolute nightmare, BUT you are also f***ing awesome. I'll kind of miss you. Love, Tommy.”
