Fans had being feared for the film’s future but it appears Fox is moving ahead with the project.
Channing Tatum has reportedly finally closed a deal to star in Gambit, Fox’s X-Men spin-off movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter Tatum is now fully on board for the project, despite negotiations with the studio hitting a snag last week.
Channing Tatum has reportedly closed a deal to star as Gambit.
Last week it was suggested that Tatum was exiting the project after failing to come to terms with the studio. But sources have told THR that while Tatum and the studio did hit a sensitive spot in negotiations, such back-and-forth is a normal part of top-level talent dealmaking.

Another important detail to work out was said to be the extent of Tatum’s involvement in the X-Men universe. The studio reportedly sees the Gambit character as comparable to Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, i.e. a character who would anchor their own movies and appear in numerous others. That mean’s Tatum’s commitment to the franchise could last for years. Source also told THR that backend compensation was also a sticking point in negotiations.
Tatum’s involvement in the film was never said to be in any real danger as the actor was already heavily invested in the project. His name has been attached to the movie for years as both the star and producer and he also made a surprise appearance at Fox’s X-Men panel during Comic-Con last month.

The film will be directed by Rupert Wyatt, who recently helmed Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes and the script will be penned by Josh Zetumer working off a treatment by Gambit co-creator Chris Claremont. Producing will be Tatum along with Reid Carolin, Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg.
