'The Avengers' has continued its inexorable rise to the top of the all-time grossing list after joining the $1 billion club, having remained at the top of the U.S. Box Office. CBS reports that the superhero action film took another mighty total of $103.2 million to lead the field and make it a whopping $373.2 million for the film in the U.S. since its release. More than that though it's success on the global market has meant that it's gone over an estimated $1 billion in takings in just 19 days - a remarkable feat which means that even the phenomenal success of 'The Hunger Games' earlier in the year has all but been consigned to memory.
Of course unlike 'The Hunger Games,' 'The Avengers' has some rather hearty backing behind it and somewhat of an illustrious heritage having been adapted from the Marvel comics of the same name. Although far superior to the Lionsgate film worldwide, it hasn't quite topped it at home, with 'The Hunger Games' currently on $386.9 million as the highest grossing film in the US of 2012.
That barrier is sure to fall as well though, and the question is now whether it can beat 'Avatar' as the highest grossing film of all time; it'll be a tough order as that film took over $2 billion in an incredible run. However, the omens look good as this weekend 'The Avengers' topped the Cameron flick for most taken on a second weekend at the U.S. Box Office. Only time will tell.
