The 39-year-old Oscar-winning actress is a huge fan of the 'Blue Jasmine' star, 44, and burst into tears while watching the new movie.
The 'To Rome With Love' star told People.com: ''I saw 'Blue Jasmine' and I loved it. I was blown away. Cate Blanchett is an unbelievably gifted actress; she's incredible. It made me laugh and it made me cry.''
Penelope, who gave birth to her second child, Luna, in July, and has a two-year-old son, Leonardo, with her husband, Javier Bardem, 44, also opened up about her love of the TV series 'Sex and the City,' which ended in 2004.
The Spanish actress, who appeared in the movie 'Sex and the City 2' in 2010, admitted she doesn't watch much television but is still an expert on the series.
She said: ''I was addicted to 'Sex and the City'. I'm an expert on it and can answer any question about any character. And a day doesn't go by without someone talking to me about 'Breaking Bad,' but I haven't seen it yet. First I have to find the time!''
The brunette beauty recently credited breastfeeding for helping her to slim down after two pregnancies but sunscreen has also helped her to maintain her looks.
She said: ''I'm very careful [about my skin]. I go in the sun with like 50 protection. I like being in the sun, being on the beach and lying there with a book, but I put on protection no matter what.''
