An American costume company has triggered outrage on social media after it made Caitlyn Jenner Halloween outfit available for sale online.

Jenner’s fans and members of the transgender community are up in arms after the $74.99 ‘Call Me Caitlyn’ costume, based on the famous Vanity Fair front cover in which the reality TV star unveiled her feminine identity back in June, was made available for sale on a number of online outlets.

The unisex ensemble has been labelled “transphobic” and “disgusting”, with a Change.org petition asking for the item’s withdrawal from sale garnering hundreds of signatories. Addison Vincent, who started the petition, wrote: “Do not turn Caitlyn Jenner into a costume. Your profit will only lead to greater transphobia and marginalization of an already at-risk community.”

Other organisations have also condemned the sale of the ‘Call Me Caitlyn’ costumes. “There's no tasteful way to 'celebrate' Caitlyn Jenner or respect transgender people this way on the one night of the year when people use their most twisted imaginations to pretend to be villains and monsters,” said Vincent Villano, spokesman for the National Center for Transgender Equality in Washington.

Spirit Halloween, believed to be the first company to make it available, defended the outfit. Lisa Barr, the organisation’s senior director of marketing, said on Tuesday (August 25th): “We create a wide range of costumes that are often based upon celebrities, public figures, heroes and superheroes.”

“We feel that Caitlyn Jenner is all of the above and that she should be celebrated. The Caitlyn Jenner costume reflects just that.” However, the costume has since disappeared from its website, with no official comment as to the reason.

At the time of writing, it is still for sale on Anytime Costumes and Wholesale Halloween Costumes.
