The fast food joints and car washes of 'Breaking Bad' have turned the most unlikely parts of the New Mexico capital into increasingly popular tourist destinations
Breaking Bad comes to an end after five gloriously gripping seasons this Sunday (29 Sept.), when fans of the show will finally say goodbye to Walter White, Jesse Pinkman and the crystal blue colouring of Albuquerque's criminal underworld. But although the series will soon come to an end, it's legacy will be sticking around for much, much longer, especially in the city of Albuquerque itself, where an influx of tourism prompted by the show has turned some banal locations into the unlikeliest of tourist hotspots.
Stars Aaron Paul (L) and Bryan Cranston (R) have helped turn Albuquerque into an unlikely tourist hotspot
The Albuquerque Biological Park, Albuquerque Museum of Art and History, the Museum of Natural History and Science and the city's Old Town were once the notable tourist destinations for the New Mexico city, but now people are flocking to the Octopus car wash and Twisters, a burrito joint within the city. As initially reported by the BBC, these are locations that would otherwise slip into a banal backdrop of everyday life in Albuquerque, but today they are now celebrating their newfound heritage as the locations where Walter White (Bryan Cranston) slowly but surely went from sympathetic high school chemistry teacher, to murderous crystal meth kingpin.
The much discussed series has sparked an alternative tourist trail, where devoted fans of the show will travel out of their way to see the locations where the show was shot. And what's more, these places are embracing this influx of interest and are doing their best to cash in.
Breaking Bad comes to an end on Sunday, 29 Sept.
Whether it's the car wash were Walt initially began working part-time before turning it into a front to launder his drug earnings, which now sells it's own blue meth; a suspicious looking package sold as 'Breaking Bad candy.' Or the fast food joint known on the show as Los Pollos Hermanos, which doesn't sell drug-funded chicken in real life, but embraces it's association with the show by retaining props used during filming. All of a sudden, everyday Albuquerque has become much more interesting.
