A member of the academy that awards the Nobel prize for literature has branded Bob Dylan ‘impolite and arrogant’ for not yet acknowledging the award.

Dylan was announced as the recipient of this year’s Nobel Prize in literature on October 13, but he is yet to make any public comment.

According to the Associated Press, Swedish writer Per Wastberg said: "One can say that it is impolite and arrogant. He is who he is.

"We have agreed not to lift a finger. The ball lies entirely on his half," he added.

"You can speculate as much as you want but we don’t.”

But the rest of the Nobel Academy has moved to distance itself from Mr Watsberg’s comments.

In a statement to the New York Times the academy said: “The Swedish Academy has never held a view on a prizewinner’s decision in this context, neither will it now, regardless of the decision reached.

“A member of the academy, Per Wastberg, has publicly expressed his disappointment at Bob Dylan’s omitted response. This is Mr. Wastberg’s private opinion and is not to be taken as the official standpoint of the Swedish Academy.”

After Dylan was announced as the recipient a reference to the award appeared on his official website, before being swiftly removed.

He also played a Las Vegas concert on the evening of October 13, but made no reference to the prize.

It is not know if Dylan will attend the prize giving ceremony which will be held in Stockholm on December 10.
