Beyonce may be a happy and successful mother right now, but it took a lot of struggles to get to this stable point in her life, as her new documentary shows.

The star opens up about her miscarriage a couple of years ago in a documentary for HBO, entitled Life Is But a Dream. In it she says, “About two years ago, I was pregnant for the first time. And I hear the heartbeat, which was the most beautiful music I ever heard in my life,” People magazine have quoted. This is the first time the singer has talked about those trying times, after husband Jay Z revealed it in a song, released for the birth of their daughter, Blue Ivy.

In the documentary, Beyonce reportedly talks about the excitement of being pregnant for the first time: “You are so open. You are so overjoyed,” she says. “There’s no words that can express having a baby growing inside of you, so of course you want to scream it out and tell everyone.” She then goes on to discuss the trauma of going through her miscarriage. Ultimately though, it is a story of triumph for the couple, as we all know, as they recently celebrated the first birthday of Blue Ivy.
