Ben Affleck has admitted that he has struggled with alcoholism, opening up to his fans in an emotional message via his official Facebook page and mentioning that he has finished a recent course of treatment for alcohol addiction.

44 year old Affleck, an Oscar-winning actor and director, thanked his wife Jennifer Garner in the note. The pair acrimoniously separated in the summer of 2015 over rumours of infidelity, but recent reports have suggested the pair have reconciled and are giving their marriage another go.

“I have completed treatment for alcohol addiction; something I’ve dealt with in the past and will continue to confront,” the star wrote on Tuesday night (March 14th).

“I want to live life to the fullest and be the best father I can be. I want my kids to know there is no shame in getting help when you need it, and to be a source of strength for anyone out there who needs help but is afraid to take the first step. I’m lucky to have the love of my family and friends, including my co-parent, Jen, who has supported me and cared for our kids as I’ve done the work I set out to do.”

Affleck’s battle with drink problems date back over 15 years, with reports of a first, 30-day rehab stint back in 2001, although he himself later described that stay as a “pre-emptive strike” because of his family’s history of the same problem.

“This was the first of many steps being taken towards a positive recovery,” he concluded in his post.

Recently, Affleck, whose younger brother Casey also won an Oscar for Best Actor in Manchester By the Sea, pulled out of directing duties for the upcoming stand-alone The Batman movie, but is still expecting to star in and help produce it.
