The stars have signed up to back the U.S.' 2015 Fair Play Fair Pay Act, which seeks to ensure that artists receive adequate payments when their songs are played by radio stations.

Lennox took to Twitter.com to urge fellow artists to sign the petition, writing, "I don't want a new generation of musicians to disappear. Please join me in supporting #FairPlayFairPay."

A number of stars including Chaka Khan and British pop stars Will Young and Katie Melua posted the same message on the microblogging site to show their support for the new law.
